From Smart Ports to Intelligent Trade Corridors: A Proposed Fifth-Generation Port Model for Value Creation Across Africa’s Corridors and Blue Economy, by Rhavy Nursimulu, FCILT. October 2026 edition cover.
AIC2030 Thematic Monograph Series, No. 02 · Revised architectural edition, 30 October 2026

About the monograph

Beyond the smart port. Towards the productive gateway.

Smart-port technologies can improve individual operations while clearance, inland transport, energy or payment remains unreliable. This monograph asks how African ports can convert operating gains into retained productive value by connecting maritime services, gateway interfaces, authorised decisions, enterprise capability and sustained stewardship around a defined economic purpose.

The proposed African Fifth-Generation Port model rests on five capabilities: Maritime and Operational Excellence, Gateway Integration, Gateway Decision Intelligence, Productive Value Creation, and Custodial and Compounding Leadership. Safe marine access, nautical competence, terminal performance and maintenance remain its operational foundations.

The Mombasa, Durban, Port Louis and Abidjan–Lagos strategic blueprints supply differentiated applications. The publication distinguishes established evidence from authored propositions and scenarios, with application protocols, a glossary and exercises for testing the architecture.

01

The African Fifth-Generation Port

Five connected capabilities describe the port’s maritime responsibilities and its authorised, collaborative anchoring role across inland and ocean relationships.

02

Port, corridor and Blue Economy

The intelligent corridor links maritime services, inland enterprises and productive platforms, while seafood, vessel services, BlueTech and energy connect the port to the ocean economy.

03

Investment and productive value

Governance, investment and the Port Value Account connect accepted information to funded services, retained value and the reinvestment that renews productive capability.
