Re-Architecting African Freight: How Movement Can Build Africa’s Productive Economy, by Rhavy Nursimulu, FCILT. October 2026 edition cover.
Publication edition · Revised 6 October 2026

About the monograph

Beyond movement. Towards productive value.

Africa’s growing cities, industries and regional markets need a freight system designed around productive economies. This monograph asks how movement can help build capability, retain value and strengthen enterprises across the continent.

It brings freight economics, industrial geography, energy, metropolitan circulation and system governance into one decision framework. Its sequence is practical: avoid unnecessary movement, optimise necessary movement, shift suitable freight to the right mode, and clean the remaining energy and assets.

Nine African laboratories test the framework across different geographies. The publication distinguishes established evidence from authored propositions and illustrative scenarios, with a research programme for testing choices against route-level data.

01

The productive freight economy

Productive Density and Productive Yield shift attention from tonnes moved to the processing, skills, enterprises and retained value that movement supports.

02

Re-architecting movement

Road, rail, water, metropolitan logistics and energy are considered together. Modal choices are tested across the complete route, including interfaces, reliability and total cost.

03

From doctrine to decision

A six-engine Productive Freight Decision Model, evidence requirements and an implementation protocol connect the framework to decisions that can be tested and measured.

Inside the publication

The framework, part by part.

Ten parts connect productive freight economics with movement, energy, market power and implementation, including four productive-density journeys and nine African laboratories.

Also includes an executive overview, evidence guide, six technical annexes, source notes and a Durban–North–South Corridor implementation protocol.
